The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States has declared insufficient sleep a ‘public health problem.’

Lower productivity

Sleep deprivation is linked to lower productivity at work, which results in a significant amount of working days being lost each year.

On an annual basis, the U.S. loses an equivalent of around 1.2 million working days due to this public health problem. (provide a reference for this figure for better credibility)

Economic cost

Sleep deprivation is also associated with higher mortality risk and productivity losses in the workplace.

In the U.S alone, up to $411 billion a year, which is nearly 3 percent of the national GDP is lost due to sleep deprivation amongst the workforce.

  • Canada up to $ 21,4 billion, which is nearly 1,36 percent of the national GDP
  • UK up to $ 21,4 billion, which is nearly 1,36 percent of the national GDP
  • Germany up to $ 60 billion, which is nearly 1,56 percent of the national GDP
  • Japan up to $ 138 billion, which is nearly 2,92 percent of the national GDP
